Salesman charged with theft and damage worth Dh25,000

DUBAI // A salesman caused Dh25,000 worth of damage to the trading company office where he worked to steal Dh2,000 in cash, Dubai Criminal Court has heard.

Indian defendant FR, 24, smashed a toilet window of the company in Jebel Ali with a hammer then crawled into the premises, injuring himself on the broken glass, prosecutors said.

He sabotaged the surveillance system and tried to force open a safe, but failed, after which prosecutors said he stole Dh2,000 in cash that was left in a drawer in the accountant’s office.

The 42-year-old company’s manager MF, also from India, said he discovered the break-in at 6am the following day, September 1, when he saw the damage. He said he found damage to the accounting office’s door, the toilet window and the surveillance cameras. He then called the police.

“The cameras repairs alone cost us Dh15,000,” said MF, adding that FR was responsible for taking orders and issuing bills and was well aware of the company’s daily earnings, which he helps collect.

FR was arrested after blood samples collected from the scene matched his blood type. Records show that the hammer used in the robbery was found in his possession and had his blood on it.

Police and prosecutors said that the salesman confessed to charges during questioning, however he denied this in court on Thursday morning.

A verdict is expected on February 25.
