Restroom robbers fled with Dh78,000, Dubai court hears

DUBAI // Two drivers who knocked on the door of an apartment and pretended to be in desperate need of a restroom attacked the tenants with pepper spray and fled with more than Dh70,000, a court was told today.

The Indian drivers, AK, 25, and RK, 26, are charged with robbery.

The Dubai Criminal Court heard that they knocked on the door of EA's apartment and told him they needed to use his toilet at nearly 10pm of June 19. When EA let them in, two more men entered the apartment. They blinded EA and his friend MA with pepper spray and assaulted both men before they searched the flat for money.

They stole Dh78,000 that belonged to EA's sponsor before fleeing the apartment. The victims chased the four men and were able to catch AK.

Police later arrested RK and found Dh33,000 of the stolen money in his possession.

Records did not explain why the other two were not also charged with robbery.

Both defendants denied the charge. The next hearing will be on October 7.
