DUBAI // A suitor rejected by the woman he had asked to wed threatened that her refusal would cost her her honour, Dubai Criminal Court heard on Wednesday.
Syrian R A, 24, denied a charge of issuing threats against W A but prosecutors said that on August 31, he met the mother of the woman and threatened her daughter to her.
W A’s mother, 48-year-old Z M, from Jordan, said the Syrian had visited the family and asked for her daughter’s hand in marriage but they refused.
“Following our rejection, he started making many problems for all of my family members,” the mother said, adding that the family had lodged many complaints against him with police.
“He signed a number of undertakings at Al Rashidiya police station that he will not cause us any harm or disturbance but he continued doing so,” said Z M.
She added that on the day of the incident, she was buying a few items from a nearby supermarket and on her way back to her apartment, she met the defendant.
She told prosecutors that he told her: “I will have your daughter pay the price for rejecting me, the price will be her honour.
The mother said that he “meant by that to rape her”.
The family once more reported him to police and the Syrian was referred to prosecutors.
He denied the charge and the next hearing will be on October 25.
