More than 86,000 plastic and 4,000 glass bottles were collected at the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon on Friday.
About 30,000 runners crossed the finish line. Ethiopian athletes Lemi Hayle and Aselefech Mergia respectively won the men’s and women’s races.
More than 100 volunteers from Dulsco, the event’s recycling partner, worked to clear the bottles left behind by the runners. “This was a mammoth task for us,” said Dulsco’s waste management director.
