The leaders of the UAE have greeted counterparts from across the Arab world to mark the start of the holy month. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed, the President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, sent goodwill messages to leaders abroad while Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, widow of Sheikh Zayed, founder of the nation, sent messages to the wives of the Arab and Muslim kings, presidents and emirs. - WAM

Several companies are donating proceeds from sales during the holy month to help build shelters for homeless people. ETA Star, Dubai Lifestyle City, Homes R Us and Star Cement are donating one per cent of sales during Ramadan towards building homes for the destitute in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and northern Ethiopia. The companies are working with Habitat for Humanity. - The National

Abu Dhabi police will today begin distributing the first of an estimated 30,000 meals that officers will provide for motorists during Ramadan. Police will provide the meals in the capital, Al Ain and Al Gharbia. Maj Nasser al Kaabi, a police spokesman, said the service helped police strengthen communication with all sectors of society and was an important humanitarian gesture.- The National

The Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Charity Foundation is hosting Ramadan iftar events in several Islamic capitals during the holy month. The events will be hosted by the UAE embassies in each of the participating countries. Among the cities are Sana'a and Mogadishu. The initiative is in line with the instructions of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, Minister of Presidential Affairs - WAM

The seventh annual Ramadan Forum will begin in Dubai on Sunday. The forum, which is organised by the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, will feature lectures by scholars from across the Muslim world. It will also showcase projects developed by young Emiratis at the Ramadan Forum Souq. The event will be held in front of the Dubai Free Zone in Al Tawar from the seventh to the 20th day of the holy month. ? The National
