RAK helicopter team rescues Jebel Jais trekker

An emergency helicopter crew rescued an injured trekker from the top of the UAE’s highest mountain on Friday.

The man, in his mid-30s, was flown from Jebel Jais to hospital with unknown injuries but was later discharged after treatment.

Saeed Al Yamahi, head of the Ras Al Khaimah Police Air Wing, said his officers received a call for help on Friday afternoon.

The helicopter located the man at the summit of the 1,900-metre peak, where he was being looked after by friends.

Over recent years there have been numerous instances of trekkers becoming stranded on the mountain following injuries.

Other climbers end up calling emergency services for assistance after failing to carry enough water with them to stay hydrated.

In December last year, a rescue helicopter clipped cabling on Jebel Jais while en route to assist an injured walker.

The aircraft crashed into the mountainside, killing all four crew members on board.

RAK police have since appealed to tourists and local residents to be careful when trekking in the area, encouraging the use of experienced guides.
