ABU DHABI // Meteorologists have warned that the rainy and hazy conditions that covered the country could continue into Monday.
On Sunday, light rain was reported in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates.
Twitter users posted pictures of the showers. Some captured images of lightning flashes in the skies over Dubai.
As well as the rain on Sunday, the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology said skies were hazy and cloudy and there was a drop in temperatures.
Ahmed Habib, specialist meteorologist at NCMS, said: “Temperatures have dropped by about two to four Celsius.” The lowest temperature recorded Sunday was 17.4C at Jais Mountain at 5am.
Mr Habib said that the seas off the UAE had been rough, so warnings were issued to fishermen.
The rain had been caused by cloud drifting in from Saudi Arabia.
Mr Habib said unsettled weather was not unusual for this time of year.
“Rain in May is common and the weather is still in transition between winter and summer,” he said.
The cloudy weather was expected to continue overnight and into Monday morning.
“After this it should be clear,” said Mr Habib.
He warned that the clouds and wind could cause an increase in dust and sand in the air, which could cause poor visibility for motorists.
