Quran teacher has molestation conviction overturned on appeal

DUBAI // A Quran teacher has won his appeal against his one-year jail term for molesting an 11-year-old girl.

Bangladeshi M L, 22, taught the child and her brother at their home in Al Qusais.

The girl said he touched her breast but she moved his hand away, so he got angry and ended the lesson.

Her father, N S, 43, from India, reported the incident on June 15 this year, 18 months later, after being contacted by the parents of his daughter’s friend.

“They told me that my daughter told their daughter that the Quran teacher often touched her breast and other parts of her body because she was such a good student,” the father told the Criminal Court during the teacher’s original trial.

“When my husband confronted the teacher, he was shaking out of fear,” the girl’s mother added.

The teacher was convicted of sexual assault by the Criminal Court but this was overturned by the Appeals Court and he was acquitted.
