Public reported more than 18,000 traffic offences to police last year

The 'Kulluna Shurta', or 'We Are All Police', programme allows people to report any traffic violation immediately to the control room using a dedicated toll-free number.

More than 18,000 traffic offences were reported to Dubai Police last year by members of the public as part of the “Kulluna Shurta”, or “We Are All Police”, programme.

Maj Gen Eng Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, director of the Dubai Police General Department of Traffic, said the programme allowed people to report any traffic offence immediately to the police control room using a dedicated free number.

“Most members of the public are exposed to situations they wish to report and are often victims of aggressive driving that exposes them and others to danger,” said Maj Gen Eng Al Zafeen, adding the service relied on reports from the public and on incidents caught by surveillance cameras across the emirate.

A total of 31,118 traffic offences were recorded in 2013 by the Kulluna Shurta programme, including more than 12,000 caught on camera.

The emirate’s CCTV cameras are operated by the control and command room and last year captured offences such as blocking traffic, and parking offences such as parking on the pavement or near street-side fire hydrants or in disabled parking spaces. The cameras also spotted dangerous driving that could have lead to accidents.

May last year saw the highest number of incidents at 3,144, while the lowest number was 2,288 in December.
