ABU DHABI // Thousands of worshippers gathered at mosques around the country yesterday to offer prayers for the holy day of Eid al Adha, signalling the start of holiday celebrations. In shopping malls, parks and public centres, events were held to mark Eid and start the countdown to National Day on Wednesday. Many people spent the day with family and friends, and the events drew crowds both young and old.
Worshippers were reminded to set aside time for others and to assist the less privileged. At Sheikh Zayed Mosque, prayers were offered amid calls for adherence to Islamic teachings and values. Sheikh Ali al Hashimi, an adviser at the Ministry of Presidential Affairs, stressed solidarity and sacrifice, themes that were echoed during sermons at the Jumeirah Mosque in Dubai. Sheikh Aziz bin Farhan, the director of Da'wa and Guide Centre in Dubai, stressed in his Eid sermon that Eid al Adha "is the source of charity and donation", according to the government news agency, WAM.
Sheikh Abdullah Mohammed al Sa'di, a preacher at the General Authority for Islamic Affairs and Awqaf in Fujairah, stressed that Islam has set values that govern life, and that the Eid al Adha celebration is a time for blessing. Eid entertainment in the capital focused on culture and heritage, art, sports and folklore. The Formal Park at the Corniche has been transformed into the Aayad Village for 38 days. A series of concerts started last night with the Lebanese singer Elissa. On December 2, the popular UAE singer Hussain al Jasmi will be the main attraction.
In Dubai, children got to meet Disney characters, including Cinderella and Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and enjoy a Disney Princesses stage show at Festival City. The stage show will continue until Thursday. In Sharjah, families gathered around the city for music and entertainment. Starting yesterday, visitors to the Mega Mall could have their photograph taken with characters from the animation show Freej and join a parade of simultaneous drumming for a special challenge.

Find the right policy for you
Don’t wait until the week you fly to sign up for insurance – get it when you book your trip. Insurance covers you for cancellation and anything else that can go wrong before you leave.
Some insurers, such as World Nomads, allow you to book once you are travelling – but, as Mr Mohammed found out, pre-existing medical conditions are not covered.
Check your credit card before booking insurance to see if you have any travel insurance as a benefit – most UAE banks, such as Emirates NBD, First Abu Dhabi Bank and Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, have cards that throw in insurance as part of their package. But read the fine print – they may only cover emergencies while you’re travelling, not cancellation before a trip.
Pre-existing medical conditions such as a heart condition, diabetes, epilepsy and even asthma may not be included as standard. Again, check the terms, exclusions and limitations of any insurance carefully.
If you want trip cancellation or curtailment, baggage loss or delay covered, you may need a higher-grade plan, says Ambareen Musa of Souqalmal.com. Decide how much coverage you need for emergency medical expenses or personal liability. Premium insurance packages give up to $1 million (Dh3.7m) in each category, Ms Musa adds.
Don’t wait for days to call your insurer if you need to make a claim. You may be required to notify them within 72 hours. Gather together all receipts, emails and reports to prove that you paid for something, that you didn’t use it and that you did not get reimbursed.
Finally, consider optional extras you may need, says Sarah Pickford of Travel Counsellors, such as a winter sports holiday. Also ensure all individuals can travel independently on that cover, she adds. And remember: “Cheap isn’t necessarily best.”

Going grey? A stylist's advice
If you’re going to go grey, a great style, well-cared for hair (in a sleek, classy style, like a bob), and a young spirit and attitude go a long way, says Maria Dowling, founder of the Maria Dowling Salon in Dubai.
It’s easier to go grey from a lighter colour, so you may want to do that first. And this is the time to try a shorter style, she advises. Then a stylist can introduce highlights, start lightening up the roots, and let it fade out. Once it’s entirely grey, a purple shampoo will prevent yellowing.
“Get professional help – there’s no other way to go around it,” she says. “And don’t just let it grow out because that looks really bad. Put effort into it: properly condition, straighten, get regular trims, make sure it’s glossy.”

Recycle Reuse Repurpose
New central waste facility on site at expo Dubai South area to handle estimated 173 tonne of waste generated daily by millions of visitors
Recyclables such as plastic, paper, glass will be collected from bins on the expo site and taken to the new expo Central Waste Facility on site
Organic waste will be processed at the new onsite Central Waste Facility, treated and converted into compost to be re-used to green the expo area
