Police officer accused of taking bribes to write false accident reports

The officers were arrested after a CID officer posed as a member of the public and gave one of the accused Dh2,000 to write a false accident report.

DUBAI // Two policemen have appeared in court accused of forging official documents which claimed a traffic accident had taken place.

Prosecutors told the Dubai Criminal Court that Emirati policeman SA, 30 had taken Dh2,000 from a police source posing as a member of the public as a bribe in return for making a false traffic accident report for him to submit to the insurance company.

SA is charged with seeking a bribe, forging official documents and using a forged official documents while his compatriot police officer HH, 24 was charged with aiding and abetting, by knowing about the crime and failing to report it.

Records show that Dubai Police’s Criminal Investigation Department received information that showed SA, a traffic police officer, was taking bribes in return for false traffic accident reports.

“We arranged with a police source and provided him with the money then he called the defendant and told him that his car had been in an accident but he would need a report to submit to the insurance company so they would repair his car,” testified FB, 37, a CID officer.

He added that on October 21 last year the source met with the two defendants while they were having dinner at their police patrol car. The source handed SA the money after which SA was seen by sting operation members as he picked up his police book and wrote down the accident report.

As he signed the fake report, the arresting police officers raided and took him and his colleague HH into custody.

“When we raided, SA threw the Dh2,000 [away] and stepped on them in order to hide them by kicking them under the police car,” added FB.

Both officers denied accusations but were referred to prosecution.

Prosecutors managed to retrieve a number of phone calls from SA’s phone in which he was discussing details of fake accidents and reports with some customers.

“We are innocent your honour,” both men said in court on Sunday morning.

The next hearing will be on March 22.
