Police forum to focus on combating drug crime

DUBAI // The sixth annual Dubai Police forum on combating drugs will tackle the growing issue of narcotics use and concentrate on the prevention and treatment of addiction, its organisers have said. The event, which will take place on June 29-30, is one of the force's primary initiatives marking the UN's International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26, said Major Gen Tarish Eid al Mansouri, the director general of the force's human resources department.

The gathering at the Dubai Police Club in Garhoud will also discuss new training methods for those involved in the fight against drugs. Police will set up a training centre to focus on improving and capitalising on human resources in the fight against drug abuse, including input from private organisations. "The damaging effects of drugs are far more dangerous than they used to be thanks to the spread of artificial narcotics and pills, and it is vital that all parents remain vigilant to these dangers that are increasingly creeping into our homes, schools and colleges," said Major Gen Abdul Jalil Mahdi, the head of the Dubai Police anti-narcotics department.
