DUBAI // Sun-worshippers lounging on the shores of Dubai today would be advised to leave their iPods at home as they will likely be deemed useless when Round 2 of the UAE Jet Ski Championships get under way at The Walk in Jumeirah.
With two races across four categories - ranging from the 800cc Junior Stock to the 1600cc Runabout Super Stock - the serenity associated with the beach will be banished.
"The runabouts offer 300 horsepower so you will hear them before you see them," said Huraiz al Mur bin Huraiz, chairman of the organising committee at Dubai International Marine Club.
"Jet skiing is one of the fastest-growing marine sports in the world and that is why we have relocated from DIMC to The Walk as it will attract more spectators and help grow the interest further in this country."
Several world champions will be taking part, including Nadir bin Hendi, an Emirati, and Mehdi Menad from France.
Each race lasts between 10 and 20 minutes and features from 10 to 16 riders. While the junior jet skis average speeds of 80kph, the Runabout Super Stocks can reach up to 145kph.
"Spectators can expect exciting, powerful racing from some of the best in the sport," al Mur bin Huraiz said.
