ABU DHABI // Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, a heritage adviser to the Crown Prince and former chairman of Abu Dhabi Media, died along with two other members of the Al Mazrouei family in a car crash on Thursday afternoon.
Abu Dhabi Police confirmed the deaths outside Zayed City cemetery on Thursday afternoon but have not issued any details, as investigations are continuing.
Mr Al Mazrouei, a culture and heritage adviser to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, was in a car with Al Findi Muhsin Al Mazrouei. Both died in the accident.
The second car was carrying Mathar Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Ghanem Ali Al Mazrouei and Mathar Suhail Al Mazrouei.
Mathar was killed and the two others suffered severe injuries.
The Crown Prince’s Court expressed its sorrow and extended its condolences to Mr Al Mazrouei’s family. His prayers and funeral were held yesterday in Madinat Zayed.
Among those performing the funeral prayers were Sheikh Saif bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, and Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development, and other sheikhs and dignitaries.
Hundreds of Emiratis have sent their condolences through Twitter, with many honouring Mr Al Mazrouei for his work in promoting UAE culture.
He was quoted by Al Ittihad, The National’s Arabic-language sister paper – both of which are published by Abu Dhabi Media – after raising a flag in Abu Dhabi at UAE Flag Day last week.
“We meet today under the banner that taught us over the years the meaning of patriotism and working in the name of your country,” Mr Al Mazrouei said.
“It taught us loyalty to our wise leadership and to take pride in our history and our values.”
