Nominations flood in for Abu Dhabi awards

ABU DHABI // Thousands of nominations have poured in over the past two weeks to put forward Abu Dhabi's unsung heroes. Organisers of the Abu Dhabi Awards, which celebrate the accomplishments of individuals for showing acts of generosity, kindness or positive contributions towards the community, have so far received 7,000 nominations and expect that number to increase threefold by the end of the month.

"It is encouraging to see people appreciating the good deeds of others by participating in the nomination process," said Maryam Amiri, of the awards' organising committee. "However it is important to note that we care about the quality of nominations more than the number. A person can win an award even if they receive only one vote. The point is to find those people whose actions have previously gone unnoticed."

The awards were established as a result of the commitment of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, to preserve the legacy of his father, the late Sheikh Zayed. During his lifetime, Sheikh Zayed believed in the generosity and kindness of the people in the UAE, and that every person had a sense to care for others deep inside. In 2005, under the auspices of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Awards were launched in order to spread awareness about philanthropists among citizens and residents of the emirate. The awards were also intended to encourage others to reach out and help one another.

This year's awards, purposely launched during the holy month of Ramadan, opened for nominations on Sept 7 and will run until Oct 5. Any resident of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain or Western Region who has made an important contribution can be nominated, regardless of their age, gender or ethnicity. Nominations are being sought from all sectors of society. The committee visits schools across the region every year to encourage children to participate in the nomination process and there are nomination stations in malls, corporate buildings and government ministries. Finally there is a fleet of Smart cars touring the emirate which act as mobile nomination stations and can be flagged down and stopped by any member of the public. Winners are chosen based on the merit of their actions and not on the numbers of votes they receive. Each nomination is investigated and evaluated by a nomination panel, who then present a final shortlist to a judging committee made of senior government officials. The judging committee is assigned by Sheikh Mohammed.

"We want to recognise the deed and not the person," said Ms Amiri. The number of awards to be presented is based on the merit level of the people who were nominated. Ten individuals were given awards in 2005 and 2006, while nine received awards in 2007. Last year, 34,000 nominations were received, the majority from men. However, Ms Amiri wants to encourage women, students, executives and westerners to put forward their suggestions this year.

"We want to hear from all ages and nationalities," she said. "As well as through word of mouth and media advertisements, we are trying to reach as many people through the internet. "We expect more nominations to come in towards the end of the month when the advertising campaign becomes more aggressive but so far we are really pleased with the way things are going," added Ms Amiri. Winners will receive their awards from Sheikh Mohammed at the award ceremony in December at the Emirates Palace hotel. Only winners and their families are allowed to attend, in addition to VIPs from across Abu Dhabi.

After the awards presentation, winners will enjoy a banquet in the company of Sheikh Mohammed, to honour their valuable contributions. hdajani@thenational.ae

Dubai works towards better air quality by 2021

Dubai is on a mission to record good air quality for 90 per cent of the year – up from 86 per cent annually today – by 2021.

The municipality plans to have seven mobile air-monitoring stations by 2020 to capture more accurate data in hourly and daily trends of pollution.

These will be on the Palm Jumeirah, Al Qusais, Muhaisnah, Rashidiyah, Al Wasl, Al Quoz and Dubai Investment Park.

“It will allow real-time responding for emergency cases,” said Khaldoon Al Daraji, first environment safety officer at the municipality.

“We’re in a good position except for the cases that are out of our hands, such as sandstorms.

“Sandstorms are our main concern because the UAE is just a receiver.

“The hotspots are Iran, Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq, but we’re working hard with the region to reduce the cycle of sandstorm generation.”

Mr Al Daraji said monitoring as it stood covered 47 per cent of Dubai.

There are 12 fixed stations in the emirate, but Dubai also receives information from monitors belonging to other entities.

“There are 25 stations in total,” Mr Al Daraji said.

“We added new technology and equipment used for the first time for the detection of heavy metals.

“A hundred parameters can be detected but we want to expand it to make sure that the data captured can allow a baseline study in some areas to ensure they are well positioned.”

Six pitfalls to avoid when trading company stocks

Following fashion

Investing is cyclical, buying last year's winners often means holding this year's losers.

Losing your balance

You end up with too much exposure to an individual company or sector that has taken your fancy.

Being over active

If you chop and change your portfolio too often, dealing charges will eat up your gains.

Running your losers

Investors hate admitting mistakes and hold onto bad stocks hoping they will come good.

Selling in a panic

If you sell up when the market drops, you have locked yourself out of the recovery.

Timing the market

Even the best investor in the world cannot consistently call market movements.

Plan to boost public schools

A major shake-up of government-run schools was rolled out across the country in 2017. Known as the Emirati School Model, it placed more emphasis on maths and science while also adding practical skills to the curriculum.

It was accompanied by the promise of a Dh5 billion investment, over six years, to pay for state-of-the-art infrastructure improvements.

Aspects of the school model will be extended to international private schools, the education minister has previously suggested.

Recent developments have also included the introduction of moral education - which public and private schools both must teach - along with reform of the exams system and tougher teacher licensing requirements.

Recipe

Garlicky shrimp in olive oil
Gambas Al Ajillo

Preparation time: 5 to 10 minutes

Cooking time: 5 minutes

Serves 4

Ingredients

180ml extra virgin olive oil; 4 to 5 large cloves of garlic, minced or pureed (or 3 to 4 garlic scapes, roughly chopped); 1 or 2 small hot red chillies, dried (or ¼ teaspoon dried red chilli flakes); 400g raw prawns, deveined, heads removed and tails left intact; a generous splash of sweet chilli vinegar; sea salt flakes for seasoning; a small handful of fresh flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped

Method

Heat the oil in a terracotta dish or frying pan. Once the oil is sizzling hot, add the garlic and chilli, stirring continuously for about 10 seconds until golden and aromatic.

Add a splash of sweet chilli vinegar and as it vigorously simmers, releasing perfumed aromas, add the prawns and cook, stirring a few times.

Once the prawns turn pink, after 1 or 2 minutes of cooking,  remove from the heat and season with sea salt flakes.

Once the prawns are cool enough to eat, scatter with parsley and serve with small forks or toothpicks as the perfect sharing starter. Finish off with crusty bread to soak up all that flavour-infused olive oil.
