Nine arrested in Sharjah over illegal street gambling

SHARJAH // Nine Asians involved in illegal gambling and betting have been arrested, police said yesterday.

The eight Bangladeshi men and one Pakistani were found to be involved in betting and gambling in neighbourhoods such as Rolla after raids on Friday, a police spokesman said.

Police also found that all those arrested were illegal residents, prompting authorities to call on residents to alert police if they believe illegal immigrants may be living in their neighbourhoods.

The police spokesman said that illegal immigrants threaten the safety of the country and are often found to be involved in crime. He added that police are continuing their campaign to rid neighbourhoods of these people.
