DUBAI // New traffic cameras that can detect and fine motorists for tailgating will become operational on July 1.
Maj Gen Mohammed Al Zafeen, assistant commander general for Dubai Police, said the system would reduce traffic accidents and fatalities by penalising motorists who fail to observe a safe distance between themselves and other vehicles.
Motorists must keep five metres between their vehicle and car in front while driving at 80kph or more, he said.
Maj Gen Al Zafeen added that the radar technology the system uses is very precise and can determine the distance between vehicles travelling at any speed.
It is equipped with a camera to capture violating cars, which produces visual evidence for violations.
He urged all motorists to strictly observe a safe distance between vehicles to ensure their own safety and the safety of others, and to create an accident-free traffic environment.
On Sunday, Dubai Police revealed that 11 people had been killed in accidents caused by tailgating in the first five months of this year, while police issued almost Dh8 million in fines and nearly 80,000 black points to motorists.
Drivers found tailgating are fined Dh400 and get four black points.
