DUBAI // Two men have been arrested after a woman and her two-year-old daughter were robbed at knifepoint in their home.
Cash and jewellery worth a total of Dh25,000 was taken.
The robbers impersonated police officers and knocked on doors in the Al Quoz building last Thursday lunchtime.
When the mother opened the door, "they introduced themselves as policemen using some form of fake identity", said Lt Col Ahmad Al Merri of Dubai Police CID.
"They then threatened her with two big kitchen knives. The woman out of fear for her daughter ... gave them everything valuable in the house."
She handed over all her jewellery, worth Dh20,000, Dh5,000 in cash and the family's passports. The men also tried to take a golden bracelet from the child's wrist.
"The bracelet was stuck in her hand and they were trying to cut the bracelet with a sharp tool while the girl was crying hysterically," said Lt Col Al Merri. "The mother begged them to let go of her little girl and managed to get the bracelet off with the help of soap."
Hours later police arrested two men, A M and A Z, both in their mid 20s from Pakistan. Both worked until recently at a now-bankrupt construction company.
"We were able to identify the place where the two men were living and put them under surveillance for several hours," said Lt Col Al Merri.
Police raided a room near Jebel Ali industrial area and recovered the stolen items.
Water waste
In the UAE’s arid climate, small shrubs, bushes and flower beds usually require about six litres of water per square metre, daily. That increases to 12 litres per square metre a day for small trees, and 300 litres for palm trees.
Horticulturists suggest the best time for watering is before 8am or after 6pm, when water won't be dried up by the sun.
A global report published by the Water Resources Institute in August, ranked the UAE 10th out of 164 nations where water supplies are most stretched.
The Emirates is the world’s third largest per capita water consumer after the US and Canada.
