Motorists could catch rogue drivers on film

Drivers will soon be able to photograph or take video footage of road menaces and report offenders to police.

DUBAI // The public will soon be able to report serious road offences with their own photos and videos.
If a motorist is holding up traffic, driving erratically or creating a menace, others will be able to film the offence or take a photo and send it to Dubai Police.
Maj Gen Khamis Al Mazeina, deputy chief of the force, said a server would be set up to receive the evidence, The National's Arabic-language sister paper Al Ittihad reported on Tuesday.
It is not clear whether all Dubai motorists will be allowed to report offences.
The move is part of a project to upgrade systems in the police operations room and introduce the most sophisticated technology available, Gen Al Mazeina said.
Encouraging the public to collaborate is widely practised in developed nations and Dubai Police has already received information from scores of motorists, he said.
The move follows the high-profile case of an Emirati man who was filmed beating an Asian driver with his agal in a road-rage incident in July. The footage was posted on YouTube and the assailant and the man who filmed the incident were arrested.
The matter was settled out of court.
