Motorist caught speeding at 264kph on Ras Al Khaimah road

The driver is one of six people caught travelling at speeds faster than 200kph in the emirate last year

A young motorist was caught driving at a speed of 264 kilometres per hour on a Ras Al Khaimah road, police have revealed.

Police said the driver was one of six people caught travelling at a speed faster than 200kph last year.

Col Ahmad Al Naqbi, director of the traffic and patrols department at RAK police, said the emirate's latest traffic report showed that 85 per cent of the deadly accidents on RAK roads were caused by speeding.

“The maximum speed caught by the RAK police radars was for a young motorist driving at a speed of 264kph,” he said.

“The other five speeding drivers were caught driving at speeds of 247kph, 244kph, 243kph, 232kph, and 222kph.”

The offenders were caught speeding on Al Manei road, Mohammed bin Zayed road, Khalifa road in the southern region, Adhen road, Al Ghail road and Sheikh Zayed road in Liwa Badr and RAK international airport road.

Col Al Naqbi said police would be intensifying efforts to reduce the number of traffic accidents in the emirate by increasing patrols and the number of speed cameras.

Two weeks ago, a motorist in Ras Al Khaimah was fined more than a million dirhams for multiple speeding offences. The Emirati, 23, received 1,200 tickets and 51 separate fines for late impounded vehicle fees.
