More schools join recycling drive

When pupils at 18 schools return to class in September they will have the chance to take part in recycling.

When pupils at 18 schools return to class in September they will have the chance to take part in an activity that is gaining a foothold in the Emirates. "We are expanding our network with recycling stations at 18 schools," said Habiba al Marashi, founder and chairwoman of the the Emirates Environment Group (EEG). The "stations" will enable schools to collect paper, plastic and aluminium cans in three colour-coded cages. EEG will then pick up and recycle the material collected.

Facilities have already been installed at 10 schools in in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Ras al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm al Qaiwain. In the capital they are already in Al Taqadom School and Al Asema School, and in Al Ain at Hili School. Eight more schools will have the centres by mid-August. The expansion means the EEG will have 209 recycling centres across the Emirates. [e-mail]
