DUBAI // A body found in a car in Hatta Dam is that of a missing Ukrainian teenager, a Dubai Police source said yesterday. Dimitro Borisovich, 19, from Sharjah, had gone on a trip to Hatta with his friends on March 6 but never returned. He was last heard from at 1am on March 7. The vehicle was found under the water on Monday. The body had been identified by Mr Borisovich's family, but Major Saed al Ayali, the acting director of the criminal investigation unit at Dubai Police, said that initially police had been waiting for forensic reports for confirmation. The inquiry was first treated as a criminal investigation as a precaution, but a police source said late last night that it appeared Mr Borisovich's car had slipped into the water accidentally, drowning him.
Abdullah Mohammed, Dimitro's stepfather, said three of his stepson's friends had been held in police custody in connection with the case, but this was not confirmed by police. Mr Mohammed said the body was found in his car in the dam when he and the police searched the area. "This is not the first time the dam was searched," said Mr Mohammed. "The police looked for his body on March 9 but could not find anything. But I insisted to have them look again and we found him on Monday at noon. I am certain that it is him. I could identify him despite his body being decomposed."
Mr Borisovich and his friends, two Russians and an Uzbek, went to Hatta for a barbecue. They had planned to stay near the dam and sleep in their cars, but his friends decided to return, Mr Borisovich's family said. "It is not known why they left him there but apparently he said he was too tired to drive and decided to stay behind," Mr Mohammed said. "I am not suspicious of anybody and I do not want to think that it was a criminal act, but I will leave the police to decide this."
The family moved to the UAE in 1997. Dimitro attended school here and was working with his stepfather in the property business. His mother was devastated over the loss of her only child, said Mr Mohammed. wissa@thenational.ae

Tips for used car buyers
