ABU DHABI // Posting online photographs or videos of traffic accidents is against the law and not in keeping with the country’s values, the Ministry of Interior has said.
The warning follows an accident at a petrol station in Ajman when a motorist suffered an epileptic fit and crashed his pickup lorry into a McDonald's restaurant, killing two people – including a nine-year-old boy – and leaving five others injured.
Images from the scene circulated online in what the MoI called irresponsible behaviour that “lacks a positive spirit among citizens”, said state news agency Wam.
The ministry said the circulation of these images was “unacceptable and could cause psychological damage to family members or viewers”, adding that appropriate action would be taken against “those who indulge in such undesirable behaviours”.
Major Fawaz Abdullah, Director of the Security Media Department at the MoI, said posting images of accidents deepened the pain and grief of the families of the dead and injured.
He said people continued to film and circulate such content despite regular warnings.
Police will release information about the accident once investigations were complete, Maj Abdullah said.
