The Ministry of Labour announced on Sunday that the midday work break for labourers would begin on June 15 and continue until September 15.
The law prevents most labourers from working under direct sunlight between 12.30pm and 3pm, and requires companies to provide shade and water.
Saqr Ghobash, Minister of Labour, said there will be two shifts during these weeks, separated by the break for a total of eight hours worked.
Maher Al Obed, the assistant undersecretary for inspectional affairs at the ministry, said: “The ruling, which has run for 11 continuous years, was launched to promote health and safety precautions while on duty, in accordance with international standards.”
He pointed out that the ministry has 18 inspection teams to enforce the rules and distribute flyers as part of their awareness campaign. Those who flout the law face a Dh5,000 fine for every labourer found working during the break.
“We seek to launch more than 60,000 inspection visits, and 20,000 visits that are just aimed to spread the message,” Mr Al Obed said.
The ministry found, last year, that more than 95 per cent of businesses were in compliance.
Mr Al Obed said that the numbers are a clear pointer that most firm respect the decision and abide by UAE labour laws.
Ramadan, which is predicted to begin on June 18, will not change the number of work hours or affect the midday break.
