Men smuggled more than 100kgs of drugs into UAE hidden in furniture

The pair were sentenced to three years in prison, followed by deportation and fined Dh50,000 each

Two men have been sentenced to three years in prison each for smuggling more than 100 kilogrammes of amphetamine pills hidden in household furniture into the country.
The pair, a 32-year-old Iranian and 60-year-old Turk were caught in possession of more than one million amphetamine pills in October last year and were charged with possessing drugs to sell.

Both denied the charges in court in May.
The Iranian defendant was arrested in a warehouse in Al Quoz after police were tipped off that he was involved in consuming and selling drugs.
"After the information was confirmed we obtained an arrest warrant and apprehended the suspect on October 24 last year," said a police lieutenant colonel, 44.

Police also seized 193.6kg of amphetamines they found in the warehouse.
The suspect allegedly told police the Turkish defendant gave him the drugs.
"He told us the drugs came hidden in a furniture shipment coming from Greece, it was stashed inside chairs, and was kept in the warehouse since its arrival," he said.

The Turkish man was arrested at his residence in Al Qouz.
Police said that during questioning both men admitted to smuggling drugs into the country.

"The Turk said he owns the drugs and had them shipped in order to be sold inside the country," said the police officer.
They were fined Dh50,000 each and will be deported after serving their prison terms.
