DUBAI // Three men accused of threatening to kill an investor and his children if he did not pay them protection money have been acquitted by Dubai Criminal Court.
The men, aged 52, 51, and 29, all from Kazakhstan, were charged with issuing death threats to a 40-year-old compatriot and demanding he pay them each month. They denied the charges in court.
In March last year they came to the investor’s gym to speak to him.
“I was surprised to see them. They demanded I meet with their boss. I asked who they were and what they wanted,” said the investor who met with the 51-year-old defendant later that day at a cafe in Mall of the Emirates after he spoke to police.
“I was escorted by CID who stood far away and watched as the three men arrived,” he said.
A 53-year-old policeman said the men were arrested after CID officers positioned nearby saw the investor looking afraid as they spoke to him loudly.
They were found not guilty due to a lack of evidence.

Hili 2: Unesco World Heritage site
The site is part of the Hili archaeological park in Al Ain. Excavations there have proved the existence of the earliest known agricultural communities in modern-day UAE. Some date to the Bronze Age but Hili 2 is an Iron Age site. The Iron Age witnessed the development of the falaj, a network of channels that funnelled water from natural springs in the area. Wells allowed settlements to be established, but falaj meant they could grow and thrive. Unesco, the UN's cultural body, awarded Al Ain's sites - including Hili 2 - world heritage status in 2011. Now the most recent dig at the site has revealed even more about the skilled people that lived and worked there.
