Men arrested for selling rented cars

SHARJAH // Two Pakistani men have been arrested for selling rental cars as their own. And when police raided the Sharjah house of one of the men they found 46 passports and 46 credit cards. The passports were being used to provide false identities for the two men in order to rent cars from various companies before selling them on to unsuspecting members of the public.

Officers caught one of the suspects in the process of selling two cars after receiving a tip-off about the scam. "[He] was offering the cars he rented such as Toyota Prado, Hyundai and other branded cars for sale and was looking for serious buyers in Sharjah," said a police official. The suspect confessed that the cars belonged to an Abu Dhabi rental company and said he had been promised commission by another man for selling them.

Police then raided the second man's house, where in addition to the passports and credit cards issued by 16 different banks, they found six mobile phones and numerous sim cards. "On searching him, [a huge number] of keys from the stolen cars were found in his pocket," the CID official said. "He confessed that the car keys belong to renting companies and that he rented the cars for the purpose of selling them [on]."

Police are investigating if others are involved in similar scams. @Email:ykakande@thenational.ae
