DUBAI // A man who threatened to kill a woman after she turned down a marriage proposal and tied the knot with another suitor has been jailed for a year by Dubai Criminal Court.

Emirati H A, 24, proposed to fellow national S A, 25, but she refused. After he discovered she had married another Emirati man, he sent her text messages in which he threatened to kill her if she did not pay him Dh50,000.

He also trespassed in her house, assaulted and insulted her. The accused denied all charges in court in September but he has now been convicted of threatening to kill, issuing insults, trespassing and physical assault.

The woman said she met the defendant through his mother and he proposed to her but she said no because he was younger than her.

“Two years ago, he assaulted me and I reported him to Sharjah Police but then dropped charges. In May last year, he called me and asked me to pay him Dh50,000,” she said.

She said the text message he sent her read: “The authority is in my hand, I can ruin you, I can go to your husband and ruin your life. I cut off your daughter’s finger and you could not say a word, I sent your husband to jail and I can do it again and send you also to jail if you don’t pay me Dh50,000.”

The woman said on July 27 last year, H A then entered her home without permission.

“It was about 11pm. He told me: ‘You think I can’t find you?’ He then punched me and kicked me all over my body,” said S A, who reported the incident to police the next morning.

Prosecutors said text messages, including threats, were found on her phone, as well as demands that she pay money to the sender.

A forensic report found she suffered bruises to the neck, chest and thighs, as well as swelling around the eyes.
