DUBAI // A man who stabbed his room-mate in the stomach for saying that he wanted to have sex with the accused’s wife will serve six-months in jail.
The incident, in the early hours of New Year’s Day, occurred when the two Indians got into an argument while celebrating by drinking alcohol at their accommodation in Al Qusais.
“He told me he wanted to have sex with my wife. We argued and I pushed him. Then, I held a knife just to scare him, but he ran towards me and got injured,” said the 40-year-old worker.
The injured man, 42, told the Dubai Criminal Court his room-mate was drunk when he entered their room at 1.30am on January 1.
“He picked up my phone and smashed it, then started kicking my bed. I didn’t say or do anything because I didn’t want any trouble,” said the victim, who claimed that his compatriot then walked towards him, pulled a knife and stabbed him in the abdomen.
“I don’t know what happened. I woke up at the hospital,” the victim said.
A 29-year-old from Nepal told the court he had been celebrating with the two men but left them alone for a while. When he returned, he found the victim bleeding on the floor.
“I called police immediately,” he said.
The defendant was arrested five hours later.
He denied a charge of assaulting the safety of a person when he appeared in court. However, at Dubai Criminal Court on Thursday, he was sentenced to six months in jail.
He will be deported after completing the sentence.
