A construction worker who stabbed a colleague to death before attacking another man who came to his aid has lost an appeal against his 15-year jail term.
The 26-year-old Indian was under the influence of alcohol when he killed the worker and badly injured the victim's roommate after a row at a labour accomodation site in Jebel Ali on December 8 of last year.
He knifed the deceased, a 50-year-old man from India, twice in the chest, then stabbed his 29-year-old compatriot in the arm.
Fellow workers halted the brutal assault after being alerted by loud screams before contacting police.
The defendant was convicted of premeditated murder at Dubai Criminal Court.
He launched a bid to reduce his sentence but the term was upheld at Dubai Court of Appeal.
The injured roommate said in court records that he was inside his room when he heard a brawl in the corridor.
“I spotted both (the defendant and the deceased) exchanging blows. I stepped between them trying to separate them,” he said.
“He was carrying a knife and tried to stab the deceased five times. The victim tried to dodge the attack but was stabbed twice in the chest by and suffered other cuts in the hands and arms.”
“We broke up the fight and helped the deceased's roommate, then called police,” said an Indian worker who witnessed the incident.
Police and an ambulance arrived and took the two men to hospital.
“The deceased was unconscious when he was taken by paramedics. We found out later that he died at the hospital,” said the witness.
The reason for the altercation was not disclosed in court.
The guilty man will be deported after serving his prison term.

Importantly, we intend to operate Careem independently, under the leadership of co-founder and current CEO Mudassir Sheikha. I’ve gotten to know both co-founders, Mudassir and Magnus Olsson, and what they have built is truly extraordinary. They are first-class entrepreneurs who share our platform vision and, like us, have launched a wide range of products—from digital payments to food delivery—to serve consumers.
I expect many of you will ask how we arrived at this structure, meaning allowing Careem to maintain an independent brand and operate separately. After careful consideration, we decided that this framework has the advantage of letting us build new products and try new ideas across not one, but two, strong brands, with strong operators within each.
