DUBAI // A man who bought a second hand Nissan Patrol that didn’t pass the roadworthiness check at a vehicle testing centre threatened to set fire to the 4x4 and its previous owner.
Prosecutors told the Dubai Criminal Court that 31-year-old Emirati M S bought the used car from compatriot E A, 21, for Dh15,000 in March this year.
“I sold him my Nissan Patrol and he handed me the money, but when we went to check the car to finalise the sale and register it in his name the car didn’t pass the test,” E A said.
“I told him I can’t sell it to him but he insisted.”
M S then called a friend to help register the car.
“After he made the call I asked him to take his money and pay me Dh1,000 as a down payment, which he did.”.
Around 30 minutes later, E A said M S accused him of stealing Dh8,000 from him.
When police arrived M S became violent and assaulted one of the officers before cutting his own wrist in an attempt to end his life.
M S was charged with two counts of issuing threats – one against E A in which he threatened to burn him and the vehicle - and against the arresting officer after telling him he would stab him.
He was also charged with assaulting a police officer and attempting suicide.
M S denied the charges in court. However, he was convicted and sentenced to six months in jail.
