DUBAI // A jobless American will spend three months in jail for claiming to be a Dubai Media Incorporated employee and conning a woman he said he would hire out of Dh500.

The 28-year-old forged a work contract and a receipt, which he claimed were issued by DMI, telling the woman he worked there and could help her get a job.

The woman, whose age and nationality were not given, approached the company on June 1 and said she received a job offer from them.

A 36-year-old Emirati manager at DMI said: “When I spoke to her she told me that an American senior employee at our company sent her the offer. She showed me some documents carrying our logo that the defendant sent her and, when I compared them to ours, they turned out to be fake.”

The manager said the woman told him she had paid the defendant money, which he told her was a hiring fee.

“We don’t take fees on recruitment,” said the manager, adding that he contacted police and reported the incident.

The American confessed to charges of forgery, use of forged documents and unlawfully obtaining Dh500 from his victim.

He will be deported after serving his term.
