DUBAI // A man insulted Islam on Facebook after watching disturbing footage from Iraq, Dubai Criminal Court heard on Monday.
Prosecutors said that on July 6 last year, 41-year-old Indian S G insulted Islam and Prophet Mohammed in a Facebook post.
The defendant was arrested and had his iPhone seized after being reported to police by salesman S F, who told the court he received a WhatsApp message with a screen shot of the defendant’s post.
“Once I saw the message, I reported it to police,” the 24-year-old said.
During interrogations, the defendant confessed to posting the insults after seeing the footage from Iraq. No details were given on the video that he saw.
Reports shown in court noted that the defendant’s mobile phone had a Facebook app that was logged into the same account from which the insulting messages were posted.
S G did not appear in court to enter a plea and the next hearing is April 27.
