DUBAI // A blacksmith was so furious that he was not among his co-workers to get a pay rise that he tried to kill one of the supervisors he claimed was responsible for evaluations, a court heard on Sunday.
Prosecutors said that on February 11, a number of workers at F K’s company received raises. F K, 32, from Bangladesh, blamed the victim, M M, because he did not receive an increase.
“He blamed me for not getting the hike, although I’m not his supervisor and I’m not the one responsible for his evaluation according to which he either gets a hike or not,” said M M, 32, also Bangladeshi. “There is another supervisor who had done that, not me. He was not among the workers I evaluated.”
He added that F K’s wife left him because of their financial problems.
Prosecutors said M M and F K had worked for the same company for seven years. M M became a supervisor while the defendant remained in his position as blacksmith.
On the day of the incident, F K was heard complaining about his salary and telling co-workers that M M was responsible.
He then took a cleaver and waited for the victim outside the public bath at their labour accommodations.
Once the man came out of the shower, F K came from behind and struck him in the side with the cleaver.
“Some colleagues rushed to my help but as he waved the cleaver at them they could not help me,” M M said. “He then caught up with me and tried to strike me on the head but I raised my arm and was injured on the arm instead,”
M M rushed inside the accommodations but was chased by F K, who continued to attack him. M M received 10 strikes on his waist, back, legs and arms, and underwent three operations to save his life. He was in hospital for 11 days.
F K was found guilty of attempted murder and jailed for five years. He will be deported after completing his jail term.
