Maid jailed for six months after stealing Dh6,000 from policeman sponsor

The Indonesian maid confessed to the theft of the money and a mobile phone from the officer's mother-in-law and will be deported after her sentence is complete.

DUBAI // A maid who stole from her police officer sponsor has been sentenced to six months in jail to be followed by deportation.

Dubai Criminal Court heard that Indonesian maid SY, 40, stole Dh6,000 in cash from the officer and a mobile phone from his mother-in-law then fled the house on May 14.

Yemeni police officer SA, 33, said he arrived home after duty on the morning of May 14 to find that his maid was not there.

“I went to my mother-in-law’s room since the maid stays with her and found that she was not there,” he said.

“My mother-in-law came and told me she was missing her mobile phone. I got suspicious, searched the house and then found that the cash I was keeping in a drawer in my room was also missing.”

The policeman reported the maid when she did not return. She was arrested shortly after the report was lodged and police said that she confessed to the theft, saying that she just saw the items and took them before fleeing.
