DUBAI// A maid served her sponsor’s family tea mixed with sleeping pills then robbed them with the help of two compatriots, a court heard.

At the Dubai Criminal Court, Sri Lankan maid JA, 37 denied a charge of robbery along with her two compatriots MH, 43 and NS, 22.

Prosecutors said that on August 17 last year JA mixed the sleeping pills with tea then served it to her Indian sponsor’s family.

When the couple and their daughter fell into a deep sleep, the maid and her two accomplices stole Dh1,000, and 15,000 Rupees in cash, as well as jewellery, laptops, mobile phones, a camera and other items before fleeing the house.

The next morning, her sponsor’s wife, SP, said the family woke up to find the maid gone and the house robbed.

They called police who arrested the three Sri Lankans shortly after. During investigations, the maid and MH confessed to plotting the robbery and carrying it out after drugging her employers.

NS denied robbing the house but confessed to acting as a look out and driver for the two other defendants.

A verdict is expected on February 19.
