DUBAI // A maid who worked for a policeman in a house monitored with cameras confessed to stealing Dh5,000 before fleeing.
Sri Lankan P J, 50, was charged at Dubai Criminal Court on Wednesday with stealing the cash as well as a Samsung mobile phone and a watch on October 20 last year.
The 30-year-old Emirati policeman, S S, said that, on the day of the incident, he and all his family left the house in Al Warqa to go to work.
“When I returned at nearly 2.30pm, my wife told me that the maid cannot be found and may have absconded,” said the officer, who added that he checked the surveillance camera recordings and saw the maid leaving the villa carrying a bag with her.
The policeman and his wife checked their belongings after watching the recordings and found that a Samsung phone was missing, as well as Dh5,000 in cash that had been taken from the wife’s mother’s bedroom. The watch and a bottle of men’s aftershave were also missing, so S S called police to report the theft.
The next day, the maid was arrested and confessed to stealing from her sponsor. The cash and items were found in her handbag.
A verdict is due on January 28.
