Life sentence for killing prostitute upheld by Dubai appeals court

DUBAI // A man who strangled a prostitute over payment must see out his life sentence, Dubai Court of Appeals has ruled.

The Bangladeshi, 29, met his victim near Jebel Ali Port on March 1, 2003, and had sex with her in a deserted area. Afterwards they got into an argument over what he should pay.

He wrapped the woman’s scarf around her neck and strangled her. He dumped the body, took her phone and a few days later left the country after quitting his job.

The body was found days later. The court did not state say when the man was arrested or when he returned to the UAE.

“We found ID on the body identifying the deceased,” a policeman said.

Officers also found the victim’s mobile phone, which the killer had used.

“We arrested him at his accommodation and found a list of calls between him and the deceased on his and her phone. Later he confessed that he had killed her,” the officer said.

In both courts, the Bangladeshi denied charges of premeditated murder and theft.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment followed by deportation.
