ABU DHABI // A Kuwaiti Islamist and former member of parliament who attacked the UAE leadership on the country’s state television has been arrested.
Mubarak Al Duwailah, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, attacked the UAE and its leadership, singling out Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, on the Kuwaiti parliament’s official TV channel last month.
Following outrage from senior UAE officials over allegations made by Mr Al Duwailah, Kuwait’s foreign ministry filed a complaint against him.
On Wednesday, prosecutors issued an arrest warrant, reported Al Ittihad, The National’s Arabic-language sister paper.
After his arrest, Mr Al Duwailah was released on bail of 5,000 Kuwaiti dinar (Dh62,000) pending a decision being made in his case.
In the UAE, officials from the foreign ministry, Arab Parliament and the Federal National Council condemned Mr Al Duwailah’s statements, which were largely circulated on social media and YouTube.
Officials at Kuwait’s foreign ministry issued a quick response to the escalating political storm, saying they would act against anyone who threatened bilateral relations.
Kuwait’s National Assembly also distanced itself from Mr Al Duwailah’s comments.

The flights
The closest international airport to the TMB trail is Geneva (just over an hour’s drive from the French ski town of Chamonix where most people start and end the walk). Direct flights from the UAE to Geneva are available with Etihad and Emirates from about Dh2,790 including taxes.
The trek
The Tour du Mont Blanc takes about 10 to 14 days to complete if walked in its entirety, but by using the services of a tour operator such as Raw Travel, a shorter “highlights” version allows you to complete the best of the route in a week, from Dh6,750 per person. The trails are blocked by snow from about late October to early May. Most people walk in July and August, but be warned that trails are often uncomfortably busy at this time and it can be very hot. The prime months are June and September.
