Khalifa increases support for north

RAS AL KHAIMAH // With the nation focused on support for the Northern Emirates,Sheikh Khalifa, President of the UAE, yesterday ordered additional water supplies to be made available to the Al Madam district of Sharjah.

A total of 2.5 million gallons of water per day will be supplied from the main Fujairah-Al Ain water pipeline, which will benefit around 10,000 people in Al Madam's 42 local districts.

The Federal Electricity and Water Authority will construct water distribution networks in all districts of Al Madam, at a cost of Dh180m, and will be ready in two years.

Meanwhile, a federal committee has approved a Dh64 million budget to complete the Sheikh Khalifa Specialist Hospital in RAK. And additional funds will also be made available to build new accommodation.

The 250-bed medical facility, estimated to cost Dh947m, boasts emergency, cancer and cardiology units, which are expected to be completed by the end of next year. Another 110 villas for Emiratis will be built around the area as well, according to the WAM news agency.

The committee was assigned by Sheikh Khalifa, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, after the government earmarked Dh16 billion for infrastructure in the region.

The new hospital will reduce the number of patient transfers to other emirates, said Dr Yasser al Nuaimi, the director of the RAK medical district.

"Most of our transfers from here to Abu Dhabi or Dubai are for oncology, open heart [surgery] and multiple trauma and neurosurgery," he said. "A better solution is to make this service available locally. That's why a location was decided for the Sheikh Khalifa Hospital, so it will serve not only RAK but Fujairah, Umm al Qaiwain, Ajman and even Sharjah."

An additional Dh54m has been allocated for medical equipment for Ministry of Health hospitals and medical centres.

The largesse extends to housing as the new villas will raise the number approved in three months to 667. Of the 110 newer villas, 30 will be built in RAK, 35 in Fujairah, 15 in Sharjah and 30 in Ajman. Federal housing support has skyrocketed since 2008, with most recipients based in Abu Dhabi and RAK. Nearly 3,000 grants and loans were approved by the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme (SZHP) in 2009, the most recent statistic available.

"RAK has a good number of families and the demand for housing is increasing as the family size is large," said Mohammed al Asam, general manager of RAK municipality.

Defined benefit and defined contribution schemes explained

Defined Benefit Plan (DB)

A defined benefit plan is where the benefit is defined by a formula, typically length of service to and salary at date of leaving.

Defined Contribution Plan (DC)

A defined contribution plan is where the benefit depends on the amount of money put into the plan for an employee, and how much investment return is earned on those contributions.

Electoral College Victory

Trump has so far secured 295 Electoral College votes, according to the Associated Press, exceeding the 270 needed to win. Only Nevada and Arizona remain to be called, and both swing states are leaning Republican. Trump swept all five remaining swing states, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, sealing his path to victory and giving him a strong mandate.

Popular Vote Tally

The count is ongoing, but Trump currently leads with nearly 51 per cent of the popular vote to Harris’s 47.6 per cent. Trump has over 72.2 million votes, while Harris trails with approximately 67.4 million.

China and the UAE agree comprehensive strategic partnership

China and the UAE forged even closer links between the two countries during the landmark state visit after finalising a ten-point agreement on a range of issues, from international affairs to the economy and trade and renewable energy.

1. Politics: The two countries agreed to support each other on issues of security and to work together on regional and international challenges. The nations also confirmed that the number of high-level state visits between China and the UAE will increase.

2. Economy: The UAE offers its full support to China's Belt and Road Initiative, which will combine a land 'economic belt" and a "maritime silk road" that will link China with the Arabian Gulf as well as Southeast, South and Central China, North Africa and, eventually, Europe.

3. Business and innovation: The two nations are committed to exploring new partnerships in sectors such as Artificial Intelligence, energy, the aviation and transport industries and have vowed to build economic co-operation through the UAE-China Business Committee.

4. Education, science and technology: The Partnership Programme between Arab countries in Science and Technology will encourage young Emirati scientists to conduct research in China, while the nations will work together on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, renewable energy and space projects.

5. Renewable energy and water: The two countries will partner to develop renewable energy schemes and work to reduce climate change. The nations have also reiterated their support for the Abu Dhabi-based International Renewable Energy Agency.

6. Oil and gas: The UAE and China will work in partnership in the crude oil trade and the exploration and development of oil and natural gas resources.

7. Military and law enforcement and security fields: Joint training will take place between the Chinese and UAE armed forces, while the two nations will step up efforts to combat terrorism and organised crime.

8. Culture and humanitarian issues: Joint cultural projects will be developed and partnerships will be cultivated on the preservation of heritage, contemporary art and tourism.

9. Movement between countries: China and the UAE made clear their intent to encourage travel between the countries through a wide-ranging visa waiver agreement.

10. Implementing the strategic partnership: The Intergovernmental Co-operation Committee, established last year, will be used to ensure the objectives of the partnership are implemented.
