SHARJAH // Kalba Municipality has began a programme to demolish old houses in the Al Aaqula district.
So far 11 houses have been torn down, out of a total of 58 earmarked for demolition.
Ahmad Jumaa Al Hora, head of the Municipality, told Al Ittihad, the Arabic sister newspaper of The National, that three homes were town down on Wednesday after obtaining the Sharjah Water and Electricity Authority and Etisalat had disconnected all services.
In July 2014, Kalba Municipality warned inhabitants of old and dilapidated houses that demolition work would start in August.
Eventually, 154 old houses will be flattened to make way for a development plan to revamp Kalba city centre.
