DUBAI// A student who had his marriage proposal rejected by his sweetheart’s family allegedly threatened to slander her on Facebook.
On Sunday, Dubai Criminal Court heard that Iranian A S, 22, met S S, 17, also Iranian, on the social media website in 2013.
The two fell in love and A S asked S S’s family for permission to marry her.
“My mother refused because I was still too young,” S S said.
“Also she told me he was not from a family that is compatible to ours and asked me to end my relationship with him, so I did.”
Soon afterwards, A S began threatening that he would slander her by posting pictures of her on Facebook.
“He also threatened that he would speak badly about me and my family if I didn’t go out with him,” said S S.
S S ignored his threats, so A S began sending S S insulting text messages about her mother and brother.
He also kept calling her repeatedly for about five months, so in March of this year she decided to inform the police.
Prosecutors charged A S with issuing threats, issuing insults and with using telecommunications to disturb S S.
He was not present in court on Sunday to enter a plea.
The next hearing will be on July 1.
