DUBAI // A woman sentenced to 10 years in jail for stabbing her boyfriend to death then lying on his chest and falling asleep has had her sentence increased.
Dubai Court of Appeal on Sunday sentenced the Kazakh to 15 years in jail.
On August 16, 2014, the 33-year-old saw her Palestinian boyfriend asleep in the bedroom of their Al Qusais apartment and she tried to wake him up to talk to him, without luck.
“She then sat on him and stabbed him. He woke up and tried to defend himself, but she stabbed him two additional times.
“She slept with her head on his chest, before she called the police when she woke up,” testified a police officer.
She told officers that she had bought her boyfriend two cars and that he had taken money from her then was going to leave her.
“She was crying and hysterical. She told me that she was constantly fighting with him because he had relationships with other women and that he promised to marry her, but kept breaking his promise,” said another Emirati police officer.
The victim’s Syrian friend, 40, had dinner with the deceased in the Garhoud area on the night of the incident.
“He kept receiving phone calls during our dinner. He told me that he wanted to break up with his girlfriend because he felt uncomfortable and bored in the relationship.”
The Syrian told prosecutors that the victim often complained to him about his girlfriend for being super jealous. “He told me that she would make him problems for just saying hello to a female friend and that she kept insisting that they try to have kids together,” said the friend.
The stabber called him at noon the next day, he said. “She was crying. She told me that she had killed him and didn’t know what to do,” said the friend adding that he also reported the incident.
The woman was drunk at the time of the murder.
At the Dubai Criminal Court in June last year, she was convicted of premeditated murder, having consensual sex with the deceased and of consuming alcohol without a licence and was sentenced to 10 years in jail.
She was ordered to pay Dh100,000 as compensation to the dead man’s family and will be deported after serving her term.
The Dubai Court of Appeal increased her prison term to 15 years and upheld the compensation and deportation orders against her.
