DUBAI // An epileptic policeman who raped his wife’s cousin when she and her brother were staying at his apartment will spend a year in jail.

The Emirati defendant, 27, claimed the sex was consensual after the Filipina cousin had been given the task of looking after him and ensuring he took his medication when they moved in on January 12 last year.

“We had no place to stay because we had made arrangements to return back home, and my cousin arranged for us to stay at her apartment,” said the Filipina.

“His wife asked me to make sure he takes his medication during our stay, which I did.”

However, the 27-year-old said that on January 18 last year, the man dragged her to his bedroom and raped her.

On the day of the incident she said she arrived at the apartment after being out to find the policeman in the living room.

“I went to the kitchen to clean the dishes and prepare food when he came and asked me to go with him to the bedroom,” she said. “I refused and said I was busy cleaning the dishes, so he snatched the sponge from my hand and dragged me to the room.”

She said that she pleaded and reminded him that they were family but she said he did not listen and threw her on the bed then ripped her clothes off and raped her.

She got dressed and got out of the room to make a call but when the policeman saw she was on the phone, he kicked her out of the apartment.

The woman reported him to police.

A policeman, 63, said the defendant told him that when he responded to knocking on his door he found the woman naked and that she then threw herself at him. He claimed he pushed her out and spat on her face before he shut his door.

The findings of a medical report were not conclusive. The court, however, sentenced the policeman to one year in jail.
