JERUSALEM // Israel's prime minister says he is launching an international effort to have the United Nations rescind a scathing report on Israel's war in the Gaza Strip two years ago.

Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday said he ordered the campaign after the report's author, the international jurist Richard Goldstone, backtracked from his most damaging accusation that Israel deliberately targeted civilians.

Writing in the Washington Post, Mr Goldstone said in hindsight his report would have looked very different.

The Goldstone Report concluded that both Israel and Hamas committed potential war crimes and possible crimes against humanity. The findings triggered outrage in Israel.

During the three-week campaign, some 1,400 Palestinians were killed, including hundreds of civilians. Thirteen Israelis were killed as well.
