Inmate raped in jail by seven prisoners, Dubai court told

DUBAI // Seven prisoners took turns raping another inmate over two nights before he was able to report them to guards, a court has heard.

Five Emiratis, one Sudanese and one man who holds a Comoros Islands passport attacked the victim on June 30 last year at Dubai Central Jail, the Criminal Court was told.

The defendants, aged between 19 and 22, stopped the 24-year-old Emirati from going to prison guards.

“They were many of them and they threatened to hurt me. I got scared,” he said.

The victim reported them after they returned the following night and abused him again.

“He told us he tried to come the first time it happened but the defendants were watching him and threatened him if he made a report,” an Emirati prison guard said.

A medical report confirmed the victim had been raped and traces of DNA found on his body matched those of four of the defendants. Other samples did not give conclusive results.

Prosecutors said one of the defendants admitted during questioning to having sex with the victim but claimed it was consensual.

All seven denied a charge rape when they appeared in court.

The next hearing is scheduled for March 29.
