DUBAI // A non-resident has won his appeal against a one-year jail sentence for trying to bribe inspectors who caught him offering illegal taxi services at Dubai airport.
On Wednesday, Dubai Court of Appeal reduced the jail term against Indian L F, 34, to three months in jail.
He was spotted by two RTA inspectors taking three men from Terminal 2 to a rented Kia Sportage.
The inspectors followed the men and approached the driver, who claimed that they were all friends and he was giving them a lift. However, when the inspectors asked the men, they said they were paying L F Dh200 to drive them to Al Ain.
Somalian inspector A L, 31, said that he and his colleague headed to their car to issue the man a fine for working as a taxi without a licence but he followed them.
“He followed us and knocked on the window then offered us Dh800 as a bribe to overlook the violation,” said A L.
The inspector called the police, who arrested him and confiscated the Dh800 that he had placed in the inspector’s car.
The man denied a charge of offering bribe in criminal and appeal courts.
After being convicted and handed a year in jail, he appealed the sentence and won a reduction to three months.
