Home beckons for last stranded labourers

DUBAI // The remaining Atlantic Emirates Group workers expect to leave the country this week following the closure of the company's operations last month, which stranded thousands of labourers. The Ministry of Labour co-ordinated the return of more than 100 workers last week, leaving about 50 in their camps in Sharjah. The workers, mostly from India and Pakistan, are without running water or electricity.

"We were told we could leave on Wednesday but that did not happen," said one worker who did not want to be named. "However, we have been assured that we will leave this week. We just want return home as soon as possible." Atlantic Emirates failed to pay its 1,400 workers for more than four months. The issue came to the attention of officials after a group of workers marched to the Ministry of Labour offices to complain. Labour officials and the Indian Consulate provided food and relief materials for the workers, who were surviving on donations from nearby supermarkets and grocery stores.

The ministry liquidated the company' assets to pay the workers and fund their flight tickets. However, many went home with just half their wages, which workers said were given out at the airport, while others received nothing at all. The owner of the company is missing but is known to be in India. @Email:pmenon@thenational.ae

Water waste

In the UAE’s arid climate, small shrubs, bushes and flower beds usually require about six litres of water per square metre, daily. That increases to 12 litres per square metre a day for small trees, and 300 litres for palm trees.

Horticulturists suggest the best time for watering is before 8am or after 6pm, when water won't be dried up by the sun.

A global report published by the Water Resources Institute in August, ranked the UAE 10th out of 164 nations where water supplies are most stretched.

The Emirates is the world’s third largest per capita water consumer after the US and Canada.

US tops drug cost charts

The study of 13 essential drugs showed costs in the United States were about 300 per cent higher than the global average, followed by Germany at 126 per cent and 122 per cent in the UAE.

Thailand, Kenya and Malaysia were rated as nations with the lowest costs, about 90 per cent cheaper.

In the case of insulin, diabetic patients in the US paid five and a half times the global average, while in the UAE the costs are about 50 per cent higher than the median price of branded and generic drugs.

Some of the costliest drugs worldwide include Lipitor for high cholesterol.

The study’s price index placed the US at an exorbitant 2,170 per cent higher for Lipitor than the average global price and the UAE at the eighth spot globally with costs 252 per cent higher.

High blood pressure medication Zestril was also more than 2,680 per cent higher in the US and the UAE price was 187 per cent higher than the global price.
