High-ranking UN officials help celebrate National Day in New York



DUBAI // A reception celebrating the 42nd National Day was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Tuesday.

Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, the permanent representative of the UAE mission to the United Nations, hosted the event, which was attended by Dr Sheikh Hazza bin Sultan and a number of high-ranking UN officials and ambassadors.

They included Jan Eliasson, deputy secretary general of the UN; Dr John Ashe, president of the General Assembly; Lakshmi Puri, assistant secretary general of the UN and deputy executive director of UN Women; and David Miliband, the president and chief executive of the International Rescue Committee.

Senior New York City government officials and personalities from various sectors and institutions, such as NYU and the Guggenheim, were also present.

Ambassador Nusseibeh welcomed the attendees and outlined the UAE’s achievements since its foundation in 1971.

She also celebrated Dubai’s successful bid to host Expo 2020 and expressed her gratitude for the support member states had given the country.

“The UAE is a firm believer in the importance of multilateralism and the benefits of a strong and effective United Nations,” she said.

“The UN is the embodiment of a global collective interest and my country is a believer in that ideal.”

The ambassador reiterated her commitment to strengthening the relationship between the UAE and the UN, especially in the areas of humanitarian assistance, gender equality, development and the promotion of international peace and security.
