Expo 2020 Dubai: Bahrain reveals ‘steel forest’ pavilion

Columns in the structure will make visitors feel as if they are walking through dense woodland

Visitors to the Bahrain pavilion will feel like they are walking through a dense forest when Expo Dubai 2020 opens in October.

Officials at the Bahrain National Theatre on Tuesday confirmed the country's commitment to the six-month world fair.

The pavilion aims to show how Bahrain encourages trade and entrepreneurship.

Using the theme, Density Weaves Opportunities, the pavilion hopes to create images of weaving needles and the density of a traditionally woven fabric.

The aluminium facade represents Bahrain's main export and 126 steel columns in the structure will make visitors feel as if they are walking through a dense forest.

“Our participation in this global event is a great opportunity to affirm our cultural presence amongst the countries of the world,” said Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, president of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities and commissioner general of the pavilion.

Hundreds of countries, organisations and companies will participate in the six-month expo.

Visitors to the Bahrain pavilion will see traditional crafts from loom weaving to embroidery techniques, such as kurar and al naqda, that use silver and gold thread on fine fabric.

Woven composite materials used in the automotive and construction industry will also be shown.

Old and new technology will be on display with artisans interlacing palm leaves and installations on the manufacture of fibreglass also part of the exhibition. “We are looking forward to showcasing the kingdom's unique competitive advantages and business-friendly environment at this year's Expo 2020 event,” said Tala Fakhro, chief project officer at the country's Economic Development Board.

“Bahrain, well known for its openness and diversity, has much to offer investors and we are excited to present those opportunities.”
